Frequently Asked Questions

Will your products work on my hair?

If you see a product you would like to try, please view the product description for the best information on the hair types it serves best.

How can I reduce frizz?

Curls get frizzy and undefined when they lose protein and moisture. Deep conditioning your hair and a light trim can do wonders for making your curls come back to life. Leave- in conditioner helps to retain moisture.

How can I define my curls?

Hair butters and curl creams can help to keep your curls well defined.

How can I protect my hair while sleeping?

Before bed, you can twist or braid your hair into 2, 4, 6, or 8s depending on your hair volume and texture using hair butter, leave-in conditioner, or hair dress to retain the texture and prevent breakage from the pillow. Using a satin pillowcase or scarf to wrap your hair can help keep it protected from breakage and losing moisture as well.

Is leave-in conditioner better on wet or dry hair?

I find that leave-in conditioner absorbs best on damp hair and hair butters can usually be used on damp or dry hair. Always use the product as directed on the label by the manufacturer. Usually, they’ve tested which way is best for their product and will list that information in the directions for use.

How can I keep my hair from matting and losing my curl pattern while sleeping?

Wearing your hair in a loosely secured ponytail at the top of your head then wrapping your hair in a satin/silk scarf before bed should do the trick! You can point the top of your head downward, toward the floor and secure a satin/silk scrunchie around your hair to make a ponytail loose enough that it won’t leave indentions from the scrunchie. Sometimes this can be achieved by using the scarf only, without the scrunchie. This trick is good to use for anti-breakage if you’re transitioning too!

What are the most common reasons for breakage?

Heat damage, chemical damage, and lack of moisture. Remember that your hair is delicate and fragile. It needs tender love and care when handling!

How can I help my hair during the fall and winter months?

During cooler seasons you could use a silk scarf or wrap inside of your caps and hats, so the material of your headgear doesn’t cause harsh rubbing motions against your hair which in turn, could cause hair breakage and loss of moisture. Protective styles that keep your hair soft and moisturized are best during this time.

Why would my curly hair be turning straight?

Be careful to avoid heat damage.

Is it better to have curly or straight hair?

Embrace & love your natural hair! Your natural hair texture is beautiful and makes you, “You”! Doesn’t matter if it naturally grows more Coily, Curly, straight, wavy, or Kinky – Know that your natural hair is beautiful and that it’s your own special Superpower! How do I brush my naturally curly hair?

A detangling brush is best!

What styles can I perform on my hair if I’m transitioning?

I think Braid-outs and twist-outs would be some go-to styles while transitioning. It would help your relaxed hair blend in more with your natural curl pattern while training your new growth on how to form its natural curl.

How often should I trim my hair?

If the trim is just for style or shape, I’d say 6 months to annually. If you’re trying to keep your hair healthy, pay attention to when your hair starts to tangle more often than usual or starts to look a lot thinner on the ends than the mid shaft of your hair.

How often should I wash my hair?

This really depends on your hair, scalp, and styling practices. Generally, washing your hair once a week could be enough. However, if you use lots of products regularly, the product build-up should be washed away to cleanse your hair and scalp regularly too. If you find that your hair is losing moisture more often and becoming dry from washing, you may want to find a more moisturizing products for after the wash and/or switch to more days between washing (for example: 10 days).

What are the best products for my kinky, curly, coily hair?

What are the best protective styles?

Braid and twist styles. Protective styles are meant to style your hair in a way of locking in moisture, anti-breakage, providing a break for the hair to repair itself, and to stop constant manipulation.

How can I avoid knots and tangles?

Tangles are inevitable in your natural curl pattern. The trick to keeping tangles tamed is to keep your hair moisturized/ lubricated with leave-in conditioner and/or hair butter. Don’t be afraid to mist your hair with water before moisturizing and detangling.

What styles can I perform on my short, natural hair (TWA), or big chop?

For short hair you can try comb coils, finger coils, the sponge brush, or the twist-it-up comb. Style those edges and you’re ready to go! Personally, I loved to do the finger coils on my hair when I did the big chop. My curls would be Poppin’ every time! Accessories are always a cute add-on too!

Should my natural hair be shedding a lot?

Shedding usually depends on many factors such as length of time between detangling, the density of your hair, hormonal changes, and the manipulation of your hair (how you style and comb/brush your hair).

Does natural hair grow faster when it’s dirty?

I haven’t seen any evidence of this being true. Figure out what’s best for “your” natural hair. Such as, what products it likes and what you need to do to stop breakage. Usually, it’s not that your hair isn’t growing, it’s that there’s so much breakage, you can’t see the end result of your growth.

Is a comb or finger detangling best?

Mist the hair with water and apply leave-conditioner or hair butter to help lubricate the hair, then use your fingers to part your hair into sections, then detangle each section with your fingers. If you still feel knots and/or tangles in your hair you may want to use a wide tooth comb to carefully detangle the hair from the ends to roots. Apply leave-in conditioner or hair butter to help with lubrication as needed.

How can I have natural hair without doing the big chop?

Many people who don’t want to perform a “big chop” will go through a transition with their hair instead. This is when you stop relaxing your hair and allow your natural hair to grow while slowly performing periodic trims on the relaxed, damaged portions of your hair and allowing your natural, healthy hair to grow in.

How can I keep my natural hair curly when it’s dry?

Using leave-in conditioner, curl defining mousses, curl defining gels, and/or curl defining creams should do the trick!

How can I make my straight hair curly without using heat?

Braid-outs, twist-outs, flexi rod sets, roller sets, and Bantu Knots are great for heatless curls on straight or coily, kinky, curly hair. If you perform a braid or twist-out on straight hair, you may want to add rollers on the ends, so you have a curl pattern down the hair shaft and on the ends.

What can do for thinning hair and/or alopecia?

Massaging your scalp combined with hair masks & hair oils should help to stimulate your scalp and may start to improve the thickness of your hair. You may also want to consult with a dermatologist.

Is it better to mix products before applying?

It’s better to layer products to get the best effect and maintain moisture.

If my hair is rough and curly, how do I soften it?

You can layer products of leave-in conditioner, hair cream, and hair oil. Depending on your hair type, I know some people whose hair best tolerates oil before the cream while layering.

Can I straighten my hair naturally?

Blow-outs and silk presses are some forms of straightening the natural hair with a heat set blow dryer, a flat iron, and often a hot comb at the roots, when you want a temporary straight look. Be advised that heat is usually used for both processes. Always make sure a heat protectant is used when any processes which include the use of heat is performed on your natural hair.

How can I get a blown-out look without heat?

Personally, when I want a more blown-out look, I perform a stretching method of detangling and moisturizing my hair in sections and wrapping ponytail holders (preferably satin/silky) down the shaft of each ponytail to set the length stretch (usually overnight), then I take each ponytail out by applying a little hair oil and paddle brushing out any pattern the ponytail holders made in my hair overnight.

What hair products can I use for thinning hair and/or alopecia?

Typically, you would want to use hair products that encourage blood flow to the hair follicles and provide stimulation to dormant follicles to promote hair growth. You may also want to consult with a dermatologist.
